The initial action is like that of a spade, so it cuts into the soil, but then it works like a fork breaking things up. A single drop is all that's needed on most tools and I used to have a small piece of sponge especially for this job

Combine them with Niwaki's vegetable tanner leather holster and you have a great setup for gardening
